Every so often something comes across our desks that has nothing to do with interest rates, serviceability or lender policy, and everything to do with why we enjoy what we do. This is one of those times.
Work experience at NBS
We host Year 10 students for work experience. It’s one of our favourite things to do as a small local business. Mortgage broking isn’t the first career most 15- and 16-year-olds think of. But a week in a broking office shows them a lot about the real world: how people plan for big goals, why budgeting matters, how businesses run day to day, and how much of the job is simply talking to and helping people.
We try to give students a genuine taste of the work, not just a week of photocopying. Of course, some of them bring their own ideas.
The ad
In September 2025, one of our work experience students decided to make an ad for NBS. It’s fair to say it was rough around the edges and needed a bit of tweaking. But as Marty said when he shared it, he could not stop laughing when he watched it.
We won’t spoil it here. Watch it for yourself, and please take it in the spirit it was intended: for entertainment purposes only. It isn’t financial advice, and any claims in a student’s comedy ad aren’t ours!
Why we shared it
Partly because it was genuinely funny. But also because it captures something we value: having a go. Creating something, putting it out there and having a laugh along the way is a great skill to have at any age. Plenty of adults are too nervous to try.
It was also a good reminder for us. Seeing your business through a teenager’s eyes is humbling, and occasionally hilarious.
A few things we hope students take away
- Money skills matter early. Understanding saving, interest and debt at 15 puts you well ahead.
- Every business is a people business. Most of broking is listening and explaining things clearly.
- Curiosity counts. Never be afraid to ask a question.
- Have fun with it. Work doesn’t have to be dull.
Thanks to our students and schools
A big thank you to the students who’ve spent time with us, and to the local schools that make work experience possible. If you’re a local school or a Year 10 student interested in spending a week with a finance business, get in touch. We can’t promise you’ll make an ad, but we can promise a good week.
The serious bit
Even fun posts on a broker’s website need this note, because we take our obligations seriously. If you’re thinking about a home loan, please don’t rely on a student’s comedy ad, or on any single article. Talk to a broker about your own circumstances.
This is general information only and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation or needs. Speak to a broker before acting.
